It often happens that there is not enough time to re-read voluminous books, and the main events of them have long been buried under a veil of oblivion. In this case, the plot in abbreviation can be found in the retelling of Literary Guru. Here we briefly recount the content of the novel by F. Dostoevsky “Crime and Punishment”.
(717 words) The novel tells of the plight of student Rodion Romanovich Raskolnikov. Due to lack of money, the hero has to quit his studies at the university, and for days on end he thinks about the fate of this world while walking around the capital. Hearing the conversations of the same poor and humiliated people, Rodion thinks that he can help all of them, and is planning to kill the old percent-woman. He wants to test his theory: "Am I a trembling creature or do I have the right." On the way home, the young man turns into a pub, where he meets Semyon Zakharovich Marmeladov. A new acquaintance informs Raskolnikov that due to terrible poverty, the adviser's wife, Katerina Ivanovna, actually sent his daughter, Sonya, to the panel (she brought the girl with reproaches and complaints). Subsequently, the student gets to know both of them, and at the same time sees the poverty of the Marmeladov family. Rodion Romanovich is outraged that the relatives enjoy the position of poor Sonya and her money.
On the day of the murder, despite a well-thought-out plan of action, everything breaks down due to Rodion's insecurity. Raskolnikov kills Alena Ivanovna and her pregnant sister Lizaveta. He can find neither money nor valuable mortgages of the mortgagor. As a result, having discovered the jewelry, he goes home.
The hero finds out that it is necessary to pay the debt for accommodation. Rodion goes to the police, where he writes an explanatory note. People around him are discussing the murder. He loses his senses. When Raskolnikov comes to his senses, they ask him if he is sick. The hero, all pale, answers sharply and abruptly. Frightened by a possible search, Rodion hurries home and carries things stolen from the old woman to one of the Petersburg yards, where he hides the stolen under the stone.
Rodion visits his university friend, Razumikhin. The latter also suspects a comrade illness - delirium tremens. Later, Razumikhin visits Raskolnikov and brings Dr. Zosimov with him. So far, no one suspects a former student. Think of the dyer Mitka. In the middle of the conversation, Pyotr Petrovich Luzhin comes to him. The hero is not enthusiastic about this meeting - he honors the guest with a poisonous smile.
After some time, Rodion goes to the tavern, where he meets a police officer Zametova. The hero ponders out loud about what he could do with the old woman’s jewels. Zametov reports the conversation to other employees of the office. Soon Rodion Romanovich goes to the house where the murder was committed, asking there unusual questions to residents. One of them was embarrassed by the behavior of Raskolnikov, about which this person would subsequently inform the investigator. Suddenly, at the end of the street, Rodion distinguishes between someone talking and screaming. Going to the noise, the hero finds out that a retired titular adviser Marmeladov fell under a carriage with horses. The young man helps to take the wounded man to the house where Semyon Zakharovich dies in front of his relatives. Under these circumstances, the guest becomes acquainted with Sonya.
Soon Rodion came to his mother Pulcheria Alexandrovna and sister Dunya. Women pity the hero, find his behavior unusual.
Then he, together with his friend Razumikhin, goes to the investigator, Porfiry Petrovich, to report on the mortgage. Porfiry is cunning, pretending not to suspect Raskolnikov. The investigator asks Rodion to visit him the next day.
A student goes to Sonya, promising to tell her about the killer. Sonechka’s neighbor, landowner Svidrigailov, overhears the conversation.
Rodion sets off for a second meeting with Porfiry Petrovich, where the investigator puts forward his suspicions about the hero. This scares the student, but he knows that there is no material evidence. At this time, the painter Mikolka, who confesses to the murder, is brought to Porfiry. The investigator releases Raskolnikov.
Rodion goes to Sonya, where he confesses to a crime. The girl advises him to confess. This conversation again overhears Svidrigailov and, as a result, tries to blackmail Dunya, whom he loves (she used to work for him, they know each other). The landowner believes that this will help him achieve Avdotya Romanovna, but it all ends in failure.
Soon, Razumikhin comes to Rodion and reports that Mikolka was found guilty. After the departure of a friend, an investigator arrives at Raskolnikov, declaring that he suspects the young man of the murder of the old woman-interest-bearer and Lizaveta. Porfiry advises to admit his deeds in order to mitigate the punishment. The hero refuses, believing that no one can prove anything. The investigator leaves.
Avdotya Romanovna comes to her brother and admits that she knows everything, since Sonya revealed the truth to her. Rodion goes to the girl. She puts a cross on him, after which the hero goes outside and kneels before the people. Then he goes to the office, where he confesses to a crime.
The epilogue of the novel tells of events that occurred a year and a half after the murder. Rodion Romanovich is in prison in Siberia. About a year and a half has already passed since the crime. The mother of the hero died shortly after the trial. Dunya became the wife of Razumikhin. In the near future, they want to go to Siberia to live next to Rodion. The hero was sentenced to eight years imprisonment in Siberia, but Sonya went after him - she supports him. The hero repents of his crime. They await the end of imprisonment in order to live together.
