He continues to buy things: now he has two estates and his own crew. Here are just happiness, beloved work and noble goals no longer. Ionitch understands that he ruined his life with his own hands, but he can not do anything about it.
Thus, Chekhov is trying to show how some people can influence others. Moreover, this influence is not always positive. As we see, Startsev, who opposed society, became his typical representative. He was swallowed by the philistine vulgarity that reigns in the county. From a talented doctor, Dmitry turned into a boring and lazy Ionych.
